What $500,000 Buys in Elmore County: A Move-Up Buyer’s Guide

by De'Angela Smith

If your starter home no longer fits the way you live, $500,000 may open the door to a very different kind of home in Elmore County. The important question isn’t just how many bedrooms you can buy—it’s which combination of space, location and monthly cost makes your next move worthwhile.

Here’s how to think about your options in Wetumpka, Millbrook, Redland and beyond.

Start with what the extra space needs to do

Before you search, name the problem you’re solving. Do you need a dedicated office, a larger kitchen, a guest room or a backyard that’s easier to enjoy? A four-bedroom layout with flexible living space may work better for you than a larger house with rooms you rarely use.

At this price point, you can explore both existing homes and new construction. The trade-offs vary by property: an established home may offer mature landscaping or a different lot layout, while a new build may offer current floor plans and builder warranties. Neither automatically means fewer expenses—inspect carefully either way.

A real-world snapshot—not a promise

As of November 1, 2026, one Coventry listing in the Wetumpka/Redland area showed an asking price of $492,677 for five bedrooms, three bathrooms and about 3,089 square feet on a 0.35-acre lot. The listing also displayed HOA dues of $67 per month. That is one asking-price example, not a typical sale or a guarantee of availability; price, terms, fees and status can change.

Another Wildwood community listing advertised a five-bedroom, three-bath home at $479,900 with approximately 2,702 square feet and 0.45 acres. Verify its current status and any incentives directly before relying on it. These examples show why touring matters: similar prices can buy different layouts, lot sizes and amenities.

Compare the full cost—not just the price

A $500,000 budget should account for more than the asking price. Ask your lender for a payment estimate that includes principal, interest, property taxes, homeowners insurance, any mortgage insurance and HOA dues. Also budget for inspections, closing costs, moving expenses and maintenance. Tax assessments and insurance quotes are property-specific.

If you’re selling first, remember that equity is not the same as cash proceeds. Start with an estimated sale price, subtract your mortgage payoff and estimated selling costs, and reserve any money you need for the move or emergencies. Your lender can help you decide how much to put down.

Match the home to your week

Explore the drive from the actual address to work, school, childcare and the places you visit regularly. Check school assignments directly with the district before making an offer; a mailing address or listing description isn’t a guarantee. Then visit at different times of day and review any HOA rules that affect how you want to use the property.

Your best move-up home is the one that supports your real life—not just the one with the biggest number on the listing.
