The Elmore County Commute Test: Find a Home That Fits Your Real Schedule
An extra bedroom can make a home feel like an upgrade. An extra hour in the car every day can make it feel like a compromise. Before falling in love with a floor plan, test the drive that will shape your weekdays.
Start with a realistic baseline
For a broad city-to-city comparison, Rome2Rio estimates the drive from Millbrook to Montgomery at about 14 minutes and 10.3 miles, and Tallassee to Montgomery at about 37 minutes and 32.9 miles. These are route-planning estimates between general locations—not rush-hour predictions or door-to-door promises. Your exact home, workplace and departure time can change the result considerably.
Wetumpka is another important option to test. Rather than using a single citywide estimate, map the specific home to your destination; the broader Wetumpka area covers different routes and distances. If your route uses the Emerald Mountain Expressway, check the current toll and any road changes before including it in your budget.
Map your whole day, not just the office
For each home, list the addresses and departure times that matter:
- Workplace or regular work site.
- Assigned school, childcare or after-school pickup.
- Frequently visited relatives, activities or appointments.
- The grocery store or other errands you make every week.
Run your preferred navigation app for the actual times you expect to travel. Then drive the route yourself at least once during a normal weekday. Try both morning and afternoon; a school stop, bridge, construction project or turn can change the experience.
Turn minutes into a useful comparison
Suppose Home A adds 15 minutes each way compared with Home B. That’s 30 extra minutes per commuting day, or about 2.5 hours across five commuting days, before other stops. The calculation is illustrative, not a local travel estimate. Decide what that time is worth to you—and whether the extra space, location or purchase price makes the trade-off worthwhile.
Also compare transportation costs. Fuel, vehicle wear and any tolls are separate from your mortgage payment. If you work from home some days, calculate your actual weekly driving pattern instead of assuming five round trips.
Try the “ordinary Tuesday” test
Picture an ordinary busy day: getting ready, leaving home, making your stops and getting back in time for dinner or an activity. Can the location support that schedule? Visit in the evening too, and check internet service at the exact address if remote work matters.
The right commute is personal. A home that feels like a stretch for one household might be an easy choice for another.
