Elmore County School Guide: How to Compare Your Options Before You Buy

by De'Angela Smith

A home can check every box on your wish list and still leave one important question: what does the school day look like from here? If education is part of your move-up decision, the smartest starting point is the exact property address—not the ZIP code, city name or school listed in an advertisement.

First, understand the systems

Two public school systems to investigate in this area are Elmore County Public Schools and Tallassee City Schools. They are separate systems; being in Elmore County does not mean every address is automatically assigned to the county system. Elmore County’s economic development authority lists schools in both systems.

Elmore County Public Schools describes five school communities: Millbrook, Holtville, Wetumpka, Redland and Eclectic. According to its registration and school-zone information, the Redland community serves elementary and middle school students, while its high school students attend Wetumpka High School. Zones and assignments can change, so confirm the current pathway for your particular address and each child’s grade.

Tallassee City Schools lists Tallassee Elementary, Southside Middle and Tallassee High through the county’s economic development resource. Ask the system about eligibility, grade configuration and enrollment requirements for the home you’re considering.

Compare what matters to your household

Instead of relying on one rating or another buyer’s definition of a “good” school, gather comparable information directly from the schools:

  • Programs: Ask about curriculum, special education services, extracurriculars and any specific program your child needs.
  • Daily logistics: Check start and end times, transportation eligibility, bus stops and after-school options.
  • Transitions: Ask which middle or high school follows the assigned elementary school and whether any future changes are planned.
  • Enrollment: Ask what proof of residency is required and when registration opens.
  • Your observations: Arrange a visit or conversation and ask the same questions at each school.

If you review test or accountability data, use the same school year and measures for each school, and consider those numbers alongside programs and your own priorities.

Confirm before you commit

Give the school system the full property address and the grades you need, and request confirmation of the assigned schools and transportation. Elmore County lists its central office at 334-567-1200. For Tallassee, use the contact information at Tallassee City Schools.

A transfer should never be assumed. Elmore County’s registration page describes application processes for out-of-district enrollment and hardship requests; approval and transportation conditions apply. Ask the appropriate system about its current rules before making plans.

A little homework now can help your next home support your household’s routine for years to come.
